On October 7, The DEA in coordination with HHS, held a virtual webinar titled, “Supporting Healthcare Professionals during the Pandemic.” Topics discussed included drugs of abuse and trends, COVID 19 guidance, telemedicine, updates on fraud and robberies, and an overview of DEA requirements regarding the handling of controlled substances according to Federal regulations.

House Bill 386 – PBM Reform Legislation successfully passed out of the Senate Commerce Committee this week. The bill is now on the Senate 2nd reading calendar, prepared for final passage.

Gov. Brad Little (R) signed into law HB 182 (Session Law Chapter 141) that eliminates the requirement that pharmacist’s prescriptive authority for specific drugs, drug categories or devices has to be granted through the Board of Pharmacy’s rulemaking authority.

Gov. Brad Little (R) signed into law HB 10, creating the first multi-state pharmacy licensure compact. The goal is to have a pharmacist’s license function similarly to a driver’s license that would be universally recognized.

The Idaho Immunization Coalition is conducting an educational adult immunization workshop on Wednesday, December 5 for healthcare professionals that will offer Continuing Education credits. This is a great opportunity for pharmacists and immunizing pharmacy technicians to attend an interdisciplinary event that delivers a clear message advocating for adult immunizations. Pharmacies have seen an increased role in providing adult immunizations and this workshop will discuss some of the common barriers encountered in the community setting. Beginning Sunday, July 1, there will no longer be a pharmacy technician to pharmacist ratio. This rule change has been approved by the State Board of Pharmacy and the state legislature.

Also in Idaho… Starting Sunday, July 1, qualified pharmacists in Idaho will be able to prescribe medications for select common conditions, including seasonal influenza, strep throat and urinary tract infections, as well as statins for patients with diabetes. The new prescribing ability results from a State Board of Pharmacy rule approved by the state legislature.

Gov. Butch Otter (R) signed HB 354 (Session Law Chapter 10) adding opioid antagonists to the list of drugs required to be reported electronically to the Board of Pharmacy’s Prescription Monitoring Program database. The reporting requirement takes effect Sunday, July 1.

The state legislature unanimously approved the Board of Pharmacy’s rule re-write eliminating over half the Pharmacy Practice Act word count, almost three quarters of the restrictions on practice, and reducing the Act to just six categories of licensure.
