The Pharmacy Society of Wisconsin reminds pharmacies participating in a Pharmacy Examining Board-approved pilot program (i.e. tech-check-tech, technician ratio, or automated technology final check), the one-page reporting form is due to the Pharmacy Examining Board by Wednesday, July 31, summarizing the pharmacy’s pilot participation from July 1, 2018 to June 30, 2019. The reporting form for each pilot can be found here. Once completed, the form should be emailed to DSPSCredPharmacy@dsps.wi.gov with cc to Sharon.Henes@wisconsin.gov.

The State Senate recently approved four appointees to the Pharmacy Examining Board. Franklin “Rocky” LaDien was reappointed to a second term, ending in 2020. Philip J. Trapskin was reappointed to a second term, ending in 2021. Cathy J. Winters was reappointed to a second term, ending in 2021. John Weitekamp was appointed to his first term, ending in 2022.

Gov. Scott Walker (R) signed into law AB 608 pertaining to remote dispensing. The law clarified that pharmacists can delegate to unlicensed personnel, such as pharmacy technicians, and that pharmacy technicians can dispense prescriptions, at remote dispensing locations.

The Pharmacy Society of Wisconsin announced resources to assist pharmacists to comply with the new law requiring pseudoephedrine products be tracked electronically through the National Precursor Log Exchange (NPLEx) effective Friday, June 1. PSW created a guide to the law and a training guide for using the internet portal.

SB 575, legislation allowing pharmacists to substitute interchangeable biologic drugs and establishing guidelines for notification, has been signed by Gov. Scott Walker (R) with an effective date of March 30. For more information, contact NACDS’ Joel Kurzman at 847-905-0555.

Also in Wisconsin… Gov. Walker signed into law AB 681, which will require minors to have a prescription to purchase products containing dextromethorphan, effective Monday, April 1, 2019.

Also in Wisconsin… the Pharmacy Examining Board announced its adopted rules updating standards for sterile and nonsterile compounding to align with USP Chapters <795> and <797> effective Thursday, November 1, 2018.

NACDS sponsored and attended the Pharmacy Society of Wisconsin’s Legislative Day on February 8. A primary focus was support for companion bills, AB 680 and SB 576, which would give pharmacists independent authority to provide vaccines listed on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Advisory Committee on Immunization Practice’s (ACIP) recommended vaccine schedules for anyone 6 years of age and older; allow pharmacists to provide vaccines not currently recommended by ACIP pursuant to a prescription, standing order or protocol for anyone 6 years of age and older; and allow pharmacists to provide vaccines to children younger than 6 years of age pursuant to a prescription.
