The Board of pharmacy issued a notice to announce its intentions to amend and adopt regulations under NAC 453 to establish standards for a computerized program to track controlled substance prescriptions. The rule would provide for the development of patient utilization reports and prescriber utilization reports, address the integration of and access to electronic health records, and address periodic board review and law enforcement access to reports.

Also in Nevada, SB 229 legislation the NACDS, the Retail Association of Nevada, pharmacies, and pharmacists, and the Nevada Department of Health and Human Services support sponsored by Sen. Julia Ratti (D) which will modernize Collaborative Practice Agreements (CPAs) and classify pharmacists as health care providers passed Senate Commerce and Labor Committee on April 6th.

The rule adds provisions on exemption certificates, defines “technologic or electronic failure,” and removes references to the transmission of controlled substance prescriptions via fax.

As a result of efforts by NACDS, the Retail Association of Nevada (RAN), and our chain pharmacy members, permanent rules passed by the Board of Pharmacy allowing pharmacy technicians to administer vaccinations last month were fast-tracked and received administrative approval in weeks rather than months. Also in Nevada. The Department of Health and Human Services, Board of Pharmacy, and Immunize Nevada will be hosting a teleconference regarding COVID-19 Vaccines on October 22, 2020, at 2 PM PT. The aforementioned state entities have stated that they appreciate the commitment of pharmacists to play a vital role in administering COVID immunizations, when available and that the goal of the meeting is to initiate a dialogue between the Nevada Department of Health and Human Services and pharmacists by providing an update on vaccine preparations and answering common questions the state has received regarding the vaccine.

Gov. Steve Sisolak (D) signed the Board of Pharmacy’s emergency rule authorizing trained pharmacy technicians to administer immunizations under the direct supervision of a pharmacist in response to the COVID pandemic. Efforts are also underway to ensure the quick adoption of a permanent rule approved by the Board.
